amish / pinecraft / sarasota

Pinecraft is a small neighborhood community of approximately 3,000 Amish and Mennonites. It is situated near the intersection of Bahia Vista Avenue and Beneva Road in Sarasota, Florida, USA. It is a popular winter vacation spot for many North American Amish and Mennonites, particularly from Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

pinecraft is a very interesting place, in fact they will tell you "no place like it in the world". i wasn't sure how they would accept me or if they would. unfortunately, a week before my arrival a film crew from the tv show "amish mafia" had rudely invaded there little world, so i had my work cut out for me. i had to answer a few questions...i had one "gentlemen" put his shuffle board stick in front of my lens, but over all it was a great experience. you will find many different kind of amish here, some are very strict and traditional, some are not. you will see some driving cars and talking on cell phones. most of the day is spent playing shuffle board or bocci ball.

and the ups man...

above is vera. she was nice enough to allow me to make this portrait of her.

if you look in the upper left of this image you will see where a man tried to stop me from taking this photo with his shuffle board stick

above is vera's home, she has lived here for 45-years
